The Professional Union for the Protection and Support of Artists strongly condemned the arbitrary and unjustified actions taken by the Mayor of Saint-Denis, Mohamed Gnabaly, who ordered the closure of the Moroccan fan pavilion at the “Africa” station following a recent artistic performance by the singer Saida Charaf.
The union emphasized that the mayor’s decision is an attack on artistic freedom of expression and an attempt to impose censorship on artists, stifling their legitimate opinions. They noted that Saida Charaf expressed her views in a civilized manner, without any inappropriate political undertones, within a cultural and artistic context aimed at celebrating the spirit of the Olympic Games.
The union stressed that this action not only affects Saida Charaf but also all Moroccan and expatriate artists who represent their culture and art on the international stage.
In response, the union announced plans to organize a series of consecutive artistic events across several French cities to celebrate President Emmanuel Macron’s sovereign decision to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. These events will reaffirm support for national causes through arts and culture.
The union added that these events will feature a selection of Moroccan and French artists and creatives who will deliver performances reflecting the historical and cultural ties between the two countries. The events will also include discussions and cultural seminars highlighting the importance of the Moroccan Sahara in the national identity of Morocco and its role in strengthening relations between Morocco and France.
