Sidi Rahal Tragedy Leads to Arrest of 5 Individuals

The Royal Gendarmerie in the Berrechid district has arrested five individuals accused of transporting people in a boat (flouka) as part of an attempted illegal migration, which resulted in the boat capsizing and causing several deaths.

According to sources from the electronic newspaper Hespress, the Berrechid Judicial Center apprehended five suspects, including two brothers, while national search warrants have been issued for ten other individuals.

The same sources emphasized that the arrested suspects, who hail from various regions, will be referred to the competent public prosecutor’s office at the Appeals Court in Settat after completing their detention period. They face charges of human trafficking.

The sources also revealed that the arrested suspects admitted to the charges against them, acknowledging their attempts to smuggle people to the northern shore using a “flouka” in exchange for fees exceeding 300,000 MAD.

Available information to Hespress indicates that the number of bodies recovered so far is nine, including a child, while the number of survivors has reached 22.

A number of individuals from different cities in Morocco, such as Mohammedia, Larache, Kenitra, and Casablanca, as well as from Sub-Saharan African countries, were on board a traditional boat that departed from Douar Al-Maharza in the Bir Jdid community, El Jadida province, heading towards Spain. However, water leaked into the boat, causing it to capsize, resulting in nine fatalities so far.
